How do You Know if Your Cat Has Fleas?

Sometimes fleas happen, and it doesn’t mean you don’t care or love your cat enough. Both indoor and outdoor cats can become a flea host. Indoor cats may even pick them up from your family dog.

How do you know if your cat has fleas? You’ll probably notice them scratching and grooming themselves more often than usual. Fleas and flea bites are itchy and can even cause allergic reactions in some cats.

You might find fleas and flea dirt (their waste) in carpeted areas, in upholstery (like your couch), and of course, your actual cat. Fleas and flea waste look like small, dark specks, about 1-2 millimeters in size.

Pest Control

Cats are usually pretty good at keeping themselves neat and tidy, but if your cat has fleas, they’ll need some help. There are many different ways to get rid of fleas, including the flea combs we review here.

Any flea treatment will also require you to clean out your house. Like human lice, cat fleas can get into your furniture, carpet/rugs, bedding, stuffed toys, and clothes, so it’s important to clean those things with hot water to kill the fleas and their eggs.

If your cat has fleas, you should talk to your veterinarian. He or she can help you find the best treatment plan for your cat’s wellbeing, and that may include flea combs. Flea combs allow you to manually remove and kill fleas that have taken up shop on your cat.

One Last Very Important Note on Getting Rid of Fleas

There are lots of topical liquid medicines available for treating fleas, ticks, and other parasites, which are frequently used to treat and prevent dog parasites. NEVER use topical dog parasite treatments on cats. These treatments may contain permethrin, which is toxic to them. If you have both dogs and cats, you may have to find alternative parasite treatments (as recommended by your veterinarian) to protect your cat(s) from permethrin exposure.

Deshedding

Flea combs physically remove fleas, eggs, and dirt from your cat’s fur. However, your cat might enjoy being groomed with a flea comb. Due to their fine teeth, flea combs can help in clearing out shed fur from your cat. Combing your flea-less cat with a comb-like these can help in controlling shedding, as well as being an excellent opportunity for your cat to have a massage. Who wouldn’t like that?

Flea Comb for Cats Reviews

Cat Grooming Comb Set by Gnawrishing

Unlike the other combs we reviewed, this is a whole kit.

Included with the purchase of this kit are 4 different combs. They are all pretty much flea combs, but they vary in shape to be more effective on different parts of your cat’s (or dog’s) body.

There is a short fine-tooth metal comb, a short-tooth plastic comb, a short-tooth comb with a handle, and a long-tooth comb.

These combs are not only good at removing fleas from your pet, but also for deshedding, removing dirt, and for other grooming needs like tear stains.

Pros

  • Purchase includes 4 fine-tooth combs in different shapes and sizes.
  • Great for both long and short-haired cats and dogs.
  • Will remove fleas and their eggs from your pet’s fur, but also suitable for other grooming needs.

Cons

  • None of the combs in this kit are super sturdy, and they may bend easily, especially if your cat’s fur is dense or rough. Take caution when using these combs on cats or dogs with thicker or longer fur.
  • The combs are all pretty much the same thing. Only one of them has longer teeth.

Flea Comb for Cats by Oster

This flea comb will help you pick out fleas, flea eggs, and debris from your cat’s fur.

The metal teeth are close together, which means it’s sure to clear out the smallest of unwanted guests on your cat.

This comb is also suitable for removing shedding fur. Even if your feline friend doesn’t have fleas, they may enjoy being brushed with this fine-toothed comb anyway!

Pros

  • The comb is shaped to fit nicely in the palm of your hand. It has a slight curve to it, which means it’s comfortable to hold and easy to brush through your cat’s fur.
  • Available for purchase in single or double packs.
  • The teeth will catch fleas, but they aren’t too sharp either, so your cat won’t mind your brushing them.

Cons

  • If you’d rather have a comb with a handle, then this comb may not be right for you. This comb is palm-sized and doesn’t have a handle.
  • The teeth could be closer together to catch more fleas and eggs.

Flea Comb with Double Row of Teeth by Hertzko

This flea comb has two rows of fine metal teeth, which means it’ll catch double the fleas, flea eggs, and dirt than a comb with a single row of teeth.

The teeth’s rounded tips won’t scratch or hurt your cat (or your dog) during a deflea-ing session.

With its easy-grip handle, your cat is sure to be feeling a lot less itchy once you start using this comb.

Pros

  • A double-row of teeth means you’re sure to remove fleas and their eggs faster from your cat’s coat.
  • Rounded tip metal teeth won’t hurt your cat’s skin.
  • Suitable for use with both cats and dogs.

Cons

  • Best used for cats and dogs with short to medium-length hair. If you have a long-haired kitty, a comb with longer teeth is recommended.

Flea Comb for Cats by Safari

Like the Hertzko comb, Safari’s comb has a handle for a comfortable and secure grip.

This flea comb has a single row of fine metal teeth and will help you weed out the fleas and their eggs and remains in your cat’s fur.

This brush is also great for deshedding.

Pros

  • The comb’s handle makes this brush easy and comfortable for you to use and hold.
  • Available for purchase in single or double packs.
  • Suitable for both short and long-haired cats.

Cons

  • Due to its extra-fine teeth, this comb should not be used on dogs.
  • The teeth are squared on the tips, not rounded, which means they don’t glide over your cat’s fur and skin as comfortably or easily.

Our Choice

Out of these flea combs, we like Hertzko’s the most. We like Hertzko’s flea comb because it has a comfortable, easy-grip handle.

We also like it because the fine metal teeth having rounded edges instead of square tips – the rounded tips are less likely to poke your cat. Rounded tips allow the comb to glide through their fur without scratching their delicate skin.

Having an easy-grip handle and rounded comb tips make de-fleaing sessions more tolerable for both you and your cat.

However, those qualities aren’t that uncommon. What sets Hertzko’s comb apart is its double row of teeth. Unlike the other flea combs we tried, Hertzko’s comb has two rows of fine metal teeth, which will help you get every single flea, egg, and speck of dirt out from your cat’s fur.

Fleas are a pain to deal with, so anything that makes their removal a bit easier is a ‘yes’ in our books.

If your cat’s got fleas, we hope they’ll be flea-less soon!
